FPA at Brands Hatch August 2009 Race 3- Race Report - Plant powers into championship lead
Plant powers into championship lead

Richard Plant completed a sensational treble at Brands Hatch today (Sunday) after taking his third win of a perfect weekend for the young Briton. The 19-year-old enjoyed three pole positions and three race wins to fire himself into the lead of the championship. He led every lap of every race at Brands Hatch and this final win was as commanding as the previous two.

Plant got a solid start, whilst Kazim Vasiliauskas stuttered away from the outside of the front row. The Lithuanian was instantly passed by Paul Rees, Adam Foster and Emma Kimilainen. As a gaggle of cars tried to avoid the slow Vasiliauskas, Ashley Babbra and Jose Alonso Liste made contact with the Formula Two podium winner. Kazim continued without damage, whilst Alonso Liste was fired into the barrier and out of the race. Babbra also retired from tenth place a few laps later after suffering mechanical problems connected with the incident.

Emma Kimilainen jumped Adam Foster on the run to Druids, but she lost the place at the very next corner as Foster responded at Graham Hill Bend. The safety car had already been deployed by the time the cars had finished the opening lap, as Alonso Liste's car was stranded in a dangerous position. Plant punched in four fastest laps at the restart to extend his lead, as both Rees and Foster hung on behind. Rees kept Plant honest as Foster then set the fastest lap of the race on lap nine.  Meanwhile championship front-runners Kazim Vasiliauskas and Tristan Vautier were scrapping for eighth. On lap 16, Vasiliauskas seemed to squeeze Vautier on to the grass as the pair ploughed down Brabham Straight at high speed. The Frenchman did well to maintain control and return to the circuit, but his car had suffered damage following the trip across the grass. Vautier retired with fluid pouring from his car, but not before he had littered the circuit with oil.

Adam Foster was immediately caught out by the slippery track surface as he ran wide at Paddock Hill Bend, which allowed Kimilainen to sneak through into third. Philipp Frommenwiler then went off at Druids Hairpin, whilst Bruce Hodges recovered from a spin at the same corner. Vasiliauskas was in a feisty mood as he pulled an aggressive move on Alice Powell coming out of Druids to take seventh place, whilst Dimitris Papanastasiou endured a brief spin at Clearways. Plant, Rees and Kimilainen were clear to take the podium positions up front, which prevented Foster from taking his third top three finish of the weekend. Maxime Jousse was leading a six car train for fifth position, but the Frenchman made a mistake at Druids and had to recover from a trip through the gravel. The incident handed Ash Davies a fantastic fifth place - well deserved after he had pressured Jousse throughout. Vasiliauskas clinched seventh ahead of Powell, whilst David Rotar recovered well from a difficult start to take eighth. One notable tussle behind included Howard Fuller and Giuseppe Cipriani as the pair swapped positions twice on lap 26. Unfortunately the fight ended in the barriers for both drivers as they made contact on the run down to Graham Hill Bend on the final lap. Plant now holds a 21 point lead in the overall standings over Kazim Vasiliauskas, whilst Tristan Vautier has dropped to third: "I am so happy," said Plant. "It has been an amazing weekend and to lead 90 laps in total was really nice. Hopefully I can now go on to win the championship."
